Showunmi on the mark in Leeds win
Enoch Showunmi scored the only goal to send Leeds into the second round of the Carling Cup against a battling Darlington side.
The tall striker pounced in the 54th minute, reacting quicker than Quakers goalkeeper David Knight to reach a cross from Robert Snodgrass.
Leeds just about deserved the victory having dictated much of the play.
After a tame opening they went close in the 27th minute when Michael Doyle’s fierce volley was parried by Knight before his defence scrambled the ball to safety.
Darlington responded with two dangerous raids. Chris Lumsdon’s free-kick was met by Lee Thorpe whose header flew wide, then Thorpe set up Jamie Chandler but he could only fire straight at defender Jason Crowe.
